A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of vardenafil (Levitra) versus placebo in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (n=51).
Methods:This study was a randomized, open, double-blind, parallel group crossover study (n=51). Inclusion criteria were age >18 years, presence of erectile dysfunction and/or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) on an ED visit and presence of both ED and BPH symptoms (ED+BPH), and at least one additional ED symptom (ED+BPH), including:erectile dysfunction, urinary retention or symptoms of urinary retention (ED+BPH). Subjects were randomly assigned to vardenafil (n=51; median age, 60.7 years; mean age range, 24-83 years; mean duration of treatment, 5.3 months) or placebo (n=51; median age, 24-31 years; mean age range, 2-33 years; mean duration of treatment, 5.3 months).
Results:In total, 45 patients (mean age, 64.3 years; range, 18-86 years; mean duration of treatment, 4.1 months) completed the study (n=51). The median duration of treatment was 3.5 months, with a wide range of 2-7 months. The incidence of ED+BPH, the incidence of ED+BPH symptoms, and ED+BPH and other signs and symptoms of BPH were statistically significantly higher for vardenafil than for placebo (P=0.01).
Conclusions:Vardenafil is as effective as placebo in the treatment of ED in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. With respect to the safety and efficacy of vardenafil for BPH, the results suggest that the efficacy and safety of vardenafil may be comparable to that of placebo.
